Q: I am looking for information on the requirements for patient bed maintenance. Can you let me know what standard(s) this work falls under? Also, where does it state that we have to follow the manufacturer’s requirements for maintenance? I agree that we need to follow those requirements, but I just need to provide documentation to administration on why this work is required.

A: According to Joint Commission standard EC.02.04.01, EP 4, the hospital must comply with the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding PM activities on medical equipment. The EP also says if you choose to have an alternative equipment maintenance (AEM) program, then you may deviate from the manufacturer’s recommendations, but be aware that there are many requirements you must comply with to have an acceptable AEM program.
