A pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus was predictable. Yet the experience itself was—and still is for many—unanticipated, says Deanna Scatena, BSN, RN, CCRN, assistant director of accreditation and certification services for the Health Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP).

“These months have taught all of us quite a few lessons on expecting the unexpected,” says Scatena. “Of course, emergency preparedness has always been a focus on HFAP surveys and will continue to be. But the pandemic has provided the unique situation of having many, many hospitals activate their Emergency Operations Plans [EOP] almost simultaneously.”

Those individual organizations have found that preparing for a public health emergency (PHE) and actually experiencing it can be very different.

Survey readiness may seem secondary during an emergency, but the magnitude of this pandemic shows that the fundamentals will help your organization make it through to the other side.

Use HFAP as a resource for education and support to help you get there, recommends Scatena, who answered questions from Healthcare Safety Leader by phone and through email.
