Emerging diseases: Check online resources regularly to stay prepared

Check CMS and CDC online information regularly to keep on top of updated guidance when emerging diseases such as the 2019 novel coronavirus become national or global concerns.

Not only will it help your facility stay ready to help patients and protect employees, but surveyors will be looking for evidence you are maintaining preparation for any possible emergency, as required by the emergency preparedness Conditions of Participation (CoP).

As the coronavirus—originally called 2019-nCoV and since dubbed COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO)—spread out of China and began to dominate global headlines, CMS issued a memo from its Quality, Safety & Oversight (QSO) group to surveyors on February 6 to urge hospitals and other providers to review their plans for handling emerging diseases.
