CMS eliminates 2nd survey for psychiatric hospitals, to merge B-tags into SOMA

CMS announced it is combining the interpretive guidelines that its surveyors use for psychiatric hospitals into the main Appendix A for hospitals, eliminating the need for double survey visits.

The federal agency said it was integrating and streamlining the survey process for psychiatric hospitals as part of its “Patients Over Paperwork” initiative.

For years, CMS has conducted two surveys at psychiatric hospitals, one for general hospital Conditions of Participation (CoP) and a second for the specialized CoPs for psychiatric facilities.

CMS announced it is combining the interpretive guidelines that its surveyors use for psychiatric hospitals into the main Appendix A for hospitals, eliminating the need for double survey visits.
