During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly expressed a desire to trim the federal workforce, something he swiftly took action on after getting sworn in. And OSHA is among the government agencies most impacted by his mandate.
Workplace fatalities rose for a third straight year in 2016, according to troubling data on fatal occupational injuries from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Although the figures were lower than in other industries, it is clear healthcare facilities are still dangerous places to earn a paycheck.
Healthcare workers know they need to be on their best behavior when a surveyor from TJC rolls through their healthcare facility. But now, after a significant rule change went into effect in 2018, all it takes is one hand hygiene slipup for a TJC surveyor to slap your organization with a citation.
The FDA in December issued a final rule on the safety and effectiveness of active ingredients in over-the-counter healthcare antiseptic hand washes and rubs that could potentially be used in a medical setting. The final rule, which led to the ban of 24 chemicals, might not have been all that surprising. But it is still significant.
Laboratorians are resourceful, and if you followed them through their workday, you would be amazed at some of the processes they have put into place to perform the tasks they’ve been assigned to do. Not all of these processes follow the written lab procedures, though. Some are not acceptable by lab accrediting agencies, and many are simply unsafe.
