USP timeline: More than 30 years of hazardous drug handling guidelines

Editor’s note: The following timeline offers a partial list of major hazardous drug handling guidelines and milestones noted on OSHA’s Safety and Health Topics webpage in the 2016 update to Controlling Exposure to Hazardous Drugs: www.osha.gov/SLTC/hazardousdrugs/index.html

1986— OSHA publishes guidelines for managing cytotoxic (antineoplastic) drugs in the workplace
1990— The American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, which later became the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), uses the term “hazardous” to include more than just cytotoxic drugs
1995— OSHA’s guidelines are included in the OSHA Training Manual (OTM)
1999— OSHA’s guidelines are published in OTM’s online version
2004— NIOSH Alert publishes “Preventing Occupational Exposure to Antineoplastic and Other HDs in Healthcare Settings,” an internationally referenced guidance document that revised ASHP’s definition of hazardous drugs
2004— The U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention (USP) publishes USP <797> to address sterile preparations in pharmaceutical compounding
2006— ASHP publishes hazardous drug guidelines
2010— NIOSH publishes list of antineoplastic and other hazardous drugs
2012— The Joint Commission releases monograph to stimulate greater awareness of relationship between patient and worker health and safety
2016— USP publishes USP <800> to address safe handling of hazardous drugs in healthcare settings
2016— American Society of Clinical Oncology/Oncology Nursing Society (ASCO/ONS) updates Chemotherapy Safety Standards, including language on hazardous drug safety for workers
2016— NIOSH updates list of antineoplastic and other hazardous drugs in healthcare settings: www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2016-161/default.html.
2016— OSHA updates online version of Con-trolling Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Drugs: www.osha.gov/SLTC/hazardousdrugs/controlling_occex_hazardousdrugs.html
