In 1993, nearly two decades ago, The Joint Commission required hospitals to ban smoking indoors, initiating the first wave of eliminating tobacco in the healthcare environment. By the following year, more than 96% of hospitals had followed through with that mandate, and 40% had tighter restrictions than the standard called for.
